Teen Suites: Giving Your Young Adult Their Own Space
Whether your recent high school graduate has decided to take a gap year, your university student is staying close to home again, or your new teen simply needs a space to call their own, the young adult in your family may be needing an updated room.
With this in mind, along with the fact that we’ve all been using our homes a little differently these days, you may be feeling as though a renovation, or home update is in the cards.
We’ve completed a number of custom built homes, and large scale renovations where growing teens have their own space, inclusive of connected bathrooms and even sitting areas in some. We’re sharing our top tips for finding space and creating a “suite” style room for the young adult in your life to call their own. Much like a nanny suite, or mother-in-law suite, this space serves as a spaces with all the amenities, other than a kitchen. After all, we don’t want them to disappear on us, rather offer privacy and independence, and perhaps find a little solace from each other :)
Teens relish in having their own space. Whether for hanging out, homework or the necessity of sleep, having a space to call their own is essential.
TIP:
When designing a custom home from start to finish, decisions should be made with the future in mind. More often than not, our clients include ensuites in all bedrooms. Not only for their growing kids and teens, but also from the perspective that one day, after the kids move out, they will return home and perhaps need or want a little more privacy. It’s a great investment and approach when you have the foresight.
Giving a young adult a space to call their own teaches independence, responsibility and accountability. They’ve got their own little apartment, so to speak, without the kitchen. Some of the spaces we’ve designed have even been large enough to include a sitting area. Talk about the perfect pad!
Not only do the designs offer function and the essentials of a bedroom, they also hone in on the style of the teen, creating a space they can call their own.
In each of these rooms, we worked directly with our clients on the specific needs/ wants and requests for each space. We also took time to learn about the kids, their hobbies, favourite sport or band so the design can be tailored to them. Collaboration is key!

They’re tailored to each teen while maintaining a cohesive connection to the rest of the home. The result of these rooms might even be so good, that your kids may never want to leave? We’ll let you decide if that’s a bad thing ;)
