Style Your Coffee Table Like a Pro With These 5 Essential Accessories
Simply put, styling is an art form. The end result takes time, patience and sometimes a few tries to get it right. While there’s no rhyme or reason, there are a few tips and tricks to consider, as well as some key ingredients for a well styled table. You’ll see in our examples below, each coffee table combines many of our 5 essential accessories for a thoughtful result!
TRAY(S)
Trays are a multipurpose layer, most specifically as a grounding item for your table. Think of a tray much as you would an area carpet in a room, a connector of sorts, and an item to create a sense of space. A tray acts as a great base for our four other essential accessories so get ready to stack and layer!
Tips!
Go big! You’ll want your tray to be large enough to fill with other objects, so take the size of your coffee table into consideration and plan accordingly.
Trays are highly functional when not donning your coffee table so you’ll get double duty out of your purchase.
Play with shapes. No need to keep round with round, and square with square. Mix and match for an unexpected arrangement.
BOOKS
Books are a great way to bring personality to your coffee table, and create topics of conversation when hosting. Whether a travel destination, a hobby, or simply a topic of interest, coffee table books are an essential! I also love having books close at hand for those quiet moments to dive in, be inspired or learn something new.
Tips!
Stack books by size, with complimentary spines.
Add height! Use books to layer vases, candles, boxes or decorative artifacts.
CANDLES
Candles are in their prime right now. With so many options for shape, size and smell, it’s hard to choose just one. There is nothing like the glow of candlelight so opting for at least one candle is definitely an essential layer for your coffee table.
Tips!
Purchase multiples. It’s never a bad idea to have candles on hand, so purchase double the amount so they’re at the ready.
When burning larger candles, a best practice is to allow the candle to burn/ liquify to the outer edge to avoid tunnelling.
I prefer neutral candles, ivory, white, light taupe or black. They combine well with coloured candlesticks, keep the focus on the coffee table.
BOXES
Perfect for storing smaller electronic items like remotes, decorative boxes provide an aesthetic storage solution for the random pieces that don’t quite belong out in the open! Layer on a tray or stack on coffee table books for a beautiful coffee tablescape.
Tips!
Explore different shapes and sizes for stacking, and layering purposes.
Ensure your box is large enough to fit miscellaneous pieces! I particularly like a box to house the remote for our fireplace.
GREENS / FLORALS
Add life to your table with a touch of green! Whether florals or greens, fill a vase with a lovely arrangement adding height, colour and movement to your coffee table. A lovely layer we would argue is a necessity!
Tips!
For a more formal aesthetic opt for a floral arrangement, the larger the arrangement the grander the look.
Keep it simple with a bud vase and single stem, a subtle yet lovely touch.
Don’t have a green thumb? There’s nothing wrong with faux greens or florals.

You can never have too many books, candles, trays, boxes and vessels for greens and florals. I love switching up my coffee table depending on the season, and letting my creative juices flow when I feel moved to do so. The most important thing… have fun, and be true to you. A coffee table should be a reflection, and celebration of who you are!
