Property Brothers: Downsizing with Daughters | Before & After
When we first walked into Catherine’s Calgary home we knew there was a challenge ahead. Her original goal was to fix up the home over time in the hopes of it being her forever home. When life circumstances changed it was too big of a project to take on and more house than Catherine needed.
Thankfully it was Property Brothers to the rescue!
In anticipation of putting the home on the market and hoping for top dollar, the main floor was in dire need of a renovation. With very little counter space and storage, a range “strategically” placed on the edge of a counter, terrible lighting and an overall poor work flow, the kitchen was not functional. And did I mention the drab and dreary chocolate brown cabinets falling apart at the seams??
the plan BEFORE:
Catherine hoped for a french country vibe with an ere to shabby chic. Collaborating with the Property Brothers we put together a scheme honouring this feel alongside a sense of modern simplicity. It was a massive undertaking considering the time and budget constraints!
Here’s what the kitchen renovation consisted of:
Moved existing dining area in order to create a larger more functional kitchen.
Removed the (leaking) double patio doors in the dining room and replaced them with a window to maintain the light while allowing the counters to continue and create symmetry either side of the hood fan.
Replaced tacky tile flooring with new hardwood.
Asbestos abatement and new drywall ceilings.
Added a (massive) island.
Increased storage exponentially.
Increased counter space.
Added an eating area more connected to the kitchen and family room.
Created a much brighter, cleaner looking kitchen with white walls and a warm taupe/ off white paint colour for the cabinetry.
Added a backsplash.
Updated appliances, including a custom hood fan and farmhouse sink.
Added functional lighting.
Replaced the windows.
the plan AFTER:
See the result of A LOT of hard work below. WHAT A TRANSFORMATION!
It felt so good to help give Catherine a refreshed and functional kitchen! The result was truly a 180 from what we first walked into.
