How to Choose a Freestanding Bathtub
At Nyla Free Designs we find the bathtub is always a topic of discussion when it comes to a new build or renovation. Not only is this a decision with respect to how it fits into the layout within the bathroom itself, however there are a number of questions to ask during the selection process. Like most bathroom fittings, there are an incredible number of options, from price point, to size, material and overall look and feel. Considering the following as you venture out to select a tub.
#1. Do you bathe?
While these aren’t in any particular order, I do feel this is THE most important question to ask. Many clients select a bathtub purely for looks, not necessarily for function. Larger homes result in spacious ensuite bathrooms demanding a tub fill a space. If that’s the main reason for a bathtub, your selection process will be different from others. If bathing is part of your daily or weekly routine (like it is mine!), I highly recommend sitting in the tub, if at all possible, prior to purchasing.
#2 How much space do you have?
A freestanding tub requires more space either side as well as along the back, especially if you’re particular about being able to clean around it. You’ll want to add approximately 10” to the three sides for easy access, so be sure the space can accommodate accordingly.
#3 What is the overall aesthetic?
From modern box-like tubs, to old fashioned claw foot, and everything in between, the options are endless. Consider the overall look of the room and decide whether modern, traditional or transitional is best. Mixing styles is also a great way to add interest within the space. For example, a traditional tub grouped with modern tile and light fixtures is a wonderful combination.
#4 Do you prefer a certain material?
While, tubs are manufactured in several types of composite materials as well as the original cast iron, this gives you the basis of the two most popular options.
Cast iron: retains heat, additional floor support required, more expensive, timeless, easy to care for, decades long durability.
Acrylic: affordable, ease of repair, lighter weight, maintenance friendly, does not retain heat as long.
#5 How will you fill it?
Of course, a free standing tub still requires a tub filler, however they too come in many forms. Some mount directly on the deck/ surround of the tub, some mount on the floor, others are installed within an adjacent wall. Understanding the placement of the tub itself, the drain location (existing and/or new) as well as any restrictions within the walls and floors will help direct you to the best selection.
#6 Who is bathing?
I know, no one wants to think about aging however if you’re investing in a new bathroom it’s best to think ahead. Some free standing tubs are tall, making them difficult to get in and out of if stability is an issue. As well, if you plan to bathe young children in a free standing tub, a lower profile will be beneficial for leaning in and helping to wash them. Again, these considerations comes down to whether or not, and how often you use the tub.

When building a new home, plans are put in place according to the design and layout of the room, with selections specified according to the overall aesthetic. Seeing the vision through to completion from here has less opportunity for shifting gears and making accommodations for any unknowns.
With a renovation, certain restrictions may need to be considered based on existing plumbing locations as well as mechanical, joist direction, etc!, most of which are not revealed until demo stage when the space is opened up. All manageable in the grand scheme to help bring the desired design to life, especially with the right team in place to work alongside you.
