3 Reasons Your Furniture May Not Be Meeting Your Needs
How is your furniture making you feel? Over the last 4 years we’ve rooted ourselves in our homes and subsequently yearned for a sense of feeling good in our spaces. Our furniture has a lot to do with this feeling and it’s important that it meets the needs of how we want to live. Whether it’s the layout, comfort or overall style, allow yourself to consider whether or not your furniture does, in fact meet your needs.
LAYOUT
The layout of your furniture says a lot about how you live in the space, and intend to use the room. Conversation, TV watching, productivity, lounging and sleeping are but a few of the activities that affect how furniture is laid out and enjoyed. Here are some questions to consider when assessing your room layout:
Does it relate to, and/or serve how I live?
Is my layout designed for lounging and watching TV, or is it better suited for conversation and social engagement?
Does the scale of my furniture work in the space?
Do I have too many small pieces?
Do the sizes of my furniture feel disconnected?
Do I have the correct pieces to suit my needs?
Sectional vs. Sofa
Chairs vs. Sofa
Tips:
Consider your overall practical needs. The function of your space must speak to your lifestyle.
Perhaps you had a sofa and a chair, but now you’re thinking a sectional might be best. With relatively minimal cost, depending on where you order from, this switch is a fairly easy fix.
Have fun with your furniture. It doesn’t have to stay in one place, move it around and switch things up!
COMFORT
Having comfortable furniture means you’re more likely to spend time in the room, and make the most use of it. Comfort makes us feel good, and ultimately draws into a space.
Do certain items need to be replaced?
Do I need new pillow inserts?
Do my sofa cushions need new fills?
Can my chairs be comfortably sat in for long periods of time?
Do I need to invest in better quality?
Is the furniture itself great but missing something, such as;
Accent pillows
Throws
Area carpet(s)
Tips:
Use the internet! If you’re purchasing online, use reviews to your advantage. This can help gauge whether the purchase is right for you and offers insight to others experience.
If you’re able to visit a showroom or storefront, test the pieces you’re considering! Talk to the sales associate about what they would recommend.
Consult a designer. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the possible options, however a designer will have an understanding of different collections, styles and comfortabilities.
STYLE
The overall style of a particular room ties both layout and comfort together. Inspiration can so easily come from our homes and living space, something we tend to forget. Ensuring your home has style, unique to you, gives us a sense of rootedness, familiarity and connection.
Is my current furniture out of date?
Should I consider exploring new styles / trends
Do I need to revamp what I already have, ie. reupholster?
Does your space feel like it needs refreshing?
Do I need new accessories, bedding, styling pieces etc.?
Has my style evolved or changed altogether?
Do I need to consider what my new style is?
Should I consult someone to help me with my style?
Tips:
Reupholstery is great for both comfort and style, as it can breathe new life into old pieces and make them feel refreshed.
Using both pattern and colour can enhance your space, adding contrast, interest and something unexpected. Step outside your comfort zone!
Trending isn’t always better. It’s important that your space reflects you, and furniture is an opportunity to bring your personality to life.
Feeling good about your furniture is an essential aspect to anyone’s home journey. Asking yourself questions such as the ones above can be thoughtful checkpoints for you to consider when you think about furniture and whether or not it is meeting your needs!
