5 Trends & 3 Forecasts We're Excited About In 2022 & Beyond

Whether you follow trends or not, they certainly do weave their way into home design and decor, influencing so much more than we realize. We shared what design trends we’re over in 2022, and now it’s time to dive into what’s new and next.

The new year always brings a trend report, whether it be a colour, style, metal finish or a design movement. We begin to see aesthetics and designs emerge and take hold, starting the buzz of a trend, love it or hate it.

While we don’t design with trends in mind, we’re influenced by way of our clients. When trends become more prevalent, and they’re noticeable on platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest, our clients gravitate towards said images in hopes of achieving a similar look and feel. We encourage our clients to take trends with a grain of salt, as they’re an ever evolving topic, and should be infused where it makes sense, and if there is a deep love for the detail. Trends can often result in designs that looks the same, and we want our clients to have a home of their own, set apart from others.

While trends are fun, and certainly worth considering through the design process, we prefer to consider design ideas in a forward thinking manner. A forecast is a prediction of what may (or we hope will) come to life in the future, whereas a trend is something already in development, and noticeable in current design.

Our post outlines trends already underway, and our own NFDI 2022 forecasts for the year ahead, and beyond. Fun fact, we have shared forecasts in our winter lookbook for the last four years, and some have come to fruition, and become more on trend. Coloured glass, curved furniture, and shades of brown to name a few!

TRENDS

CHECKERBOARD FLOORS

Checkerboard floors have been showing up everywhere in my Instagram feed, and I’m loving it. I’m a fan, and support this trend 100%. In fact, I’m not sure I’d even call it a trend, rather a classic floor pattern that’s been around since the 16th century. Since then, this floor pattern has come, and gone in popularity and right now, it’s making a surge.

COLLECTIONS

Personal collections are not only making a comeback, they’re being celebrated in the design and decor of a home. Creating a space for these items to shine, be seen and appreciated is the focus of the trend. Collections add personality, conversation and storytelling opportunities to a home, elevating the experience and feeling. A collection can be made up of anything.; vintage cameras, brass candlesticks, white vases, books or antique corkscrews. Whatever your passion and desire to collect, it deserves a special place to call home, and be on display.

TEXTURED WALLS

The raw, natural feel of a textured wall is making waves in design, going above and beyond the wallpaper trend. Whether lime washed, plaster, or a faux finish of sort, this detail is coming on strong, and creates a beautiful backdrop and texture in a space. Consider a “feature wall” or embrace the whole space, either way, it’s a lovely detail, adding warmth and interest to any aesthetic.

REEDED DETAILS

We’re in full swing on this one in my opinion, but it’s worth noting. This linear, fluting detail, that often appears in millwork designs, is a great way to add impact and visual texture to a space. This technique can be achieved in painted cabinetry, wood, and even natural stone. It’s a lovely, classic way to add impact in many areas of the home. Choose wisely, as to not overdo it!

GREEN

Green is having a moment. It’s the colour of the year from three paint companies, and is currently everywhere, from walls, to kitchen cabinets to furniture. Whether sage or mint, all the way to a brighter, bolder kelly or apple, green is taking centre stage. The best thing about a trend like this, it’s a much easier update when a new colour takes over the spotlight. That being said, green is a classic colour, and we would even argue, a neutral. Cheers to homes with a little colour!

FORECASTS

Looking past what we see as on-trend now, we’re diving further ahead into what might be next. These are the design details and movements Nyla Free Designs feel will make a surge in 2022 and beyond. Or perhaps they’re simply concepts we’d like to bring to life within our designs. Either way, we think we’re on to something.

NYLA

MIXAMALISM

The notion of being a mixamalist (yes, I made this word up), lies between a minimalist and maximalist, channeling the spirit of having the confidence to embrace the things you love, regardless of their era. It’s the notion of mixing old with new, modern with traditional, and a more sophisticated version of eclecticism. It’s about filling a room with beautiful objects, art, architectural details and furniture, all with intention and restraint.

JACKIE

DETAILS ON DETAILS ON DETAILS

Layers simply make a space feel comfortable and complete, and European interiors achieve this without fail. The perfect blend of wall paneling, lighting, furniture, colour, and heck, even pattern, make a room sing! The inclusion of unique heirlooms, reclaimed items or that special flea market find is the cherry on top to a space that is literally like no other.

CONVERSATION PITS

This trend was popularized through the 1950-1970s, and recently we've seen a revival of the retro concept. Rooted in midcentury style, it's no wonder this creative take on living room design is making a comeback in lounge spaces today. The sunken living room not only pushes the boundaries volumetrically and architecturally, but it’s also an inviting and cosy feature, centred on conversation and entertaining. What's not to love?!

The interesting thing about trends and forecasts, is everyone has an opinion. The above concepts are simply ours. We do hope they’ve inspired you to think outside the box, relish in new ideas, and bring your home to life in a personal and thoughtful way.
