Summer Solstice Party
My husband and I love to entertain. Whether it’s impromptu gatherings, small dinner parties, traditional celebrations like Thanksgiving and Christmas, or our daughters' friends, our front door is often open, and our house full.
An impromptu gathering with several friends 15 years ago after our eldest daughter’s seventh birthday party, has led to an annual tradition to celebrate the summer solstice.
It’s one of my favourite days. We gather with friends, and relish in the light extending long into the evening. It started out as a casual bbq, now we treat ourselves along with our guests to a catered evening, and most recently a private chef. It’s become an event we look forward to all year, with each party so different from one to the next, whether the guest list, food, playlist, weather or stories to tell.
Each year we make a playlist, two in fact. An upbeat and dance worthy option for daytime, and a vibey, chill collection as the sun goes down. It’s been fun to see how they’ve evolved over the years, and we’ll often listen to a playlist from years ago and reminisce.
The weather in June is unpredictable. We’ve had years where it poured buckets, and others too chilly to be outside regardless of sunshine and blue skies. Last year I had a vision of a smaller gathering, with a community style table set up in our backyard al fresco style. It was a risky ask, as the forecast was proving not to be in my favour. I crossed my fingers, toes, eyes and arms in hopes the rain would stave off. It was iffy all day, and ultimately a close call. We had a backup plan, but it didn’t make my heart happy, so I wished with all my might for Mother Nature to be on my side and help create the magical evening I hoped for. She delivered!
We’re hosting our 15th Summer Solstice gathering this weekend and I’m looking forward to an evening filled with conversation and cherished time with friends. Gathering around a table with people I love is something that’s been instilled in me from a young age, learning from my Grandparents whose door was always open too.
