Choosing a Fireplace with Avenue Magazine

Fireplaces have come a long way, not only from a functional standpoint, but also aesthetics, design, shape and energy efficiencies. Whether you love the roar of a wood burning, or clean visual of gas, there’s a fireplace for everyone. In the January issue of Avenue Magazine, Calgary designers share their advice on things to consider when choosing the best one for your home.

I’ve included our quick interview Q&A below, however there is so much more to cover in this topic…

1. What's new with fireplaces currently in terms of colour, material and style? What are the trends you're seeing?

Large format tiles and stone slabs are a favourite for fireplaces as they offer fewer seams/ grout lines, and a cleaner visual allowing the pattern and texture of the material to stand out.

While fireplaces are one of the first selections to make in a new home build, thinking all the way through to furniture placement and the use of space early on will help to determine the design of the fireplace with respect to hearth, mantel as well as square or linear installation.

2. For new home builds, new installation of fireplaces, or starting a fireplace renovation what should people think about before they begin?

Direct vent fireplaces are the most popular option today with their energy efficiency, the ability to heat a room evenly as well, they are highly versatile. Consider installing fireplaces in unexpected areas such as a dining room, master bedroom, ensuite or outdoor space.

The BTU's of the unit are also important to consider as this number indicates the amount of heat the fireplace will give off. The higher the number, the more heat.

3. Is your preference wood or gas? Why?

I prefer gas fireplaces for an interior application as they are a cleaner option both visually and physically.

I love a wood burning fireplace in an outdoor space!
